We were actually having a really good time! Jack was acting completely normal and not showing off at all. But then my dad came outside, and Jack just had to impress him by making a toy ice plane, complete with a tiny ice propeller.

“And the thing actually flies?” said Dad. “Wow, Lina, did you see this? It’s incredible!”

I don’t get it. If Jack knows he’s so much better than me, why does he always want to hang around me? I can’t figure out if he wants to be my friend, or if he just wants someone to show off in front of. Is this how all cousins are?

As for learning how to do subtle winter magic, I haven’t made any progress. Maybe I could learn if I had a different teacher. But when Jack’s around, all I can think about is how I’ll never be as good as he is.

Things are pretty confusing these days, Diary. But one thing I know for sure is that tomorrow is our field trip to the aquarium, and nothing in the world is going to ruin it for me.
